Worth It

“Mama, we really need to harvest the green beans,” Hannah kindly reminded me at 4:15 in the afternoon.

My eyes widened. “Oh yeah, I forgot all about them.” We talked through options of when exactly to harvest them for about 30 seconds and quickly realized the best time to head outdoors was right then. “OK. Gather the troops and let’s get out to the garden.”

Thankfully I already had dinner simmering on the stove, but I had to forego my workout, which I was dressed and ready for. The green beans were more important.

For the next hour and a half several of the crew and I picked a long row of green beans. It was a beautifully, breezy and overcast afternoon. We listened to some fun music while we picked (and snacked on raw green beans). It was simply perfect! Esther was a huge help this go round, but I’m still not sure if she picked or ate more. 🙂

The First Batchers (the four big kids) and I stayed up late snapping beans together after the Middles and Littles had gone to bed. We watched (or rather we mostly listened to) a movie together while we worked and laughed. I love spending time with the kids! Any ordinary moment can be transformed into a memorable time.

But, the next morning was a school day. How could I can all those beans while pulling off a normal school day? One of the best and most challenging parts of homeschooling for me is the element of flexibility. My personality loves schedules and for things to fit nice and tidy into little boxes. That’s not real life, of course! But, thankfully the Lord has taught me to adapt through the years.

As we sat around the table enjoying breakfast Timothy had made and doing our morning Bible time, I gave the Middles and Littles an abbreviated schedule for the day. I told them we would be flexible! We praised the Lord for the wonderful green bean harvest, and we all knew that being diligent with our harvest took precedence over accomplishing other things that day. Working in the garden, harvesting, and canning are real life school.

Knox helped me wash the green beans at the kitchen sink. Lauren helped Natalie with her school. Eliana and John Luke each took a turn teaching Knox while also accomplishing their individual school work. Levi helped out with needed things while I worked on kindergarten with Esther. The Littles helped me prepare the green beans and the jars at the counter. James and I sat on the kitchen floor to go over school work together while I “babysat” the canner. And the list goes on. Everyone worked together, and by the end of the day we had canned 28 quarts of green beans and had plenty left over to eat fresh for a few extra meals. We all love freshly cooked green beans with a little olive oil and salt. Yum!

Because I went to college to learn how to be a classroom teacher, I’ve actually had to unlearn many of the techniques and strategies I once learned in order to homeschool. Sometimes people say to me, “Oh, you can homeschool because you were an education major.” I always laugh at that because it’s just not the case. Rather, I need to be a loving and attentive Mama in order to homeschool our children (which is an ongoing work in progress for me).

Anyone can home school. I truly believe that. Daddies and Mamas are the the best experts when it comes to teaching their own kids. But, it takes dependence on the Lord to train up joyful children who want to learn and work with one another. Living life together every single day (all day long) no matter what a day may bring forth is one of the best parts of homeschooling.

So if you are a seasoned homeschool Dad or Mom, please don’t give up. Your children need you! If you are new to homeschooling, please hang in there. Your children need you! And if you are thinking about homeschooling (as SO many are these days!), please just do it! Your children need you! They need every moment with you, and they are worth your time. Homeschooling is about way more than just getting school work done. 🙂

Be blessed today!

Double Digits

It felt like old times. Just six youngins’ with Papa and Mama. We took the younger group of kids on a two day, one-night adventure to Jekyll Island to celebrate Eliana turning double digits. Oh what fun we had!

We were out of the house by 8:00 a.m. and didn’t return home until 8:00 p.m. the following evening.

It has become a tradition to stop at a certain gas station on our way out of town to “honk trucks.” We line up and spread out, and Tim and the kids yell and make honking motions with all their might as trucks approach. Many other vehicles honk as well – probably just at the sight of a bunch of kids lined up having fun and smiling. Whenever a big trucks honks, though, the crowd goes wild with celebration (as you can see below)! 🙂

On the way to Jekyll Island, Eliana requested that we stop and eat lunch at Panera. The kids each ordered their meals, and then the lady behind the counter complimented them for being kind and well behaved. They thanked her and also let her know it was Eliana’s birthday. As we were walking to our table the kind lady pulled me aside and asked if she could bring some cookies for Eliana to share with the other kids. I smiled and agreed. A few minutes later she brought a large box of cookies and placed them in front of Eliana. As you can see from the pictures below, excitement abounded! Eliana hugged and thanked the lady with much joy!

As soon as we arrived at Jekyll the kids wasted no time to get into their bathing suits. They wanted to head straight for the pool. One of the blessings of homeschooling is being able to go on trip when everyone else is in school. We had an almost private pool.

After pool time, we headed out to the beach for an evening walk. The weather was perfect!

The next morning the kids were eager to head to the beach after a quick breakfast. We spent several hours between the beach and the pool – building sand castles, jumping waves, and swimming – before heading home to be received with open arms by the rest of the crew.

Eliana had no idea the surprises that awaited her at home. We still had more celebrating to do! Check out Hannah and Lauren’s blog to see how Hannah made Eliana’s birthday extra special and beautiful. Oh how we praise the Lord for another year of life that He has given our Eliana Joy!

Be blessed today!

What a Race!

Our day started at 3:30 a.m. as my morning alarm played “Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus.” I immediately popped out of bed and got ready for the day. The house was buzzing with activity by 4:00 a.m. Even little Knox was running around excitedly! Our goal was to make it out of the house by 4:45 a.m. Getting our big family ready and in the van is quite a task, but we did pretty well today. We were off and away before 5:00 a.m.

Where did we go? The annual Labor Day race we all love to run and/or watch. It’s a big race! The 5K started at 7:30 a.m., and the 10K followed shortly thereafter. The 5K alone had 810 runners this year!

Tim, Hannah, Timothy, James, Levi, Eliana, and John Luke all ran the 5K together. Mama, Lauren, Grandma, and the Littles all waited at the finish line to cheer on our runners. Tim and John Luke ran in the Parent/Child team category and called themselves Speed Reed 2. The rest of the kids ran in the 5-Member Team category as Speed Reed 5. We did not expect either of our teams to even medal as this race always has lots of elite runners!

But, it was a great running day! Six of our seven runners set new PRs (personal records). That’s a huge accomplishment! Six of our seven runners also received age group medals, and several of them were first place medals. Speed Reed 5 actually received a bronze medal, which we were super excited about! They were up against some crazy competition from the Atlanta Track Club members who took home first and second place medals. But, the biggest surprise of all was when they announced that Tim and John Luke (Speed Reed 2) won first in their team category! John Luke was absolutely elated! We all were! How fun is that?!!

Once all the 5K and 10K race activities died down, it was time for the Fun Run. Now this is one of the most exciting parts of all because Tim is in the cheering section. If you’ve never heard Tim cheer at a race, you are missing out! 🙂 He cheers every little kid into the finish line no matter their age or size as if they are about to win a million dollars! He is loud and excited, and he yells his heart out over and over and over again! I absolutely love watching him, and it cracks me up! But, it works! Each and every kid who passes by looks him in the eye and then takes off in a sprint for the finish. It is the coolest thing! Levi’s goal was to win the 1-mile Fun Run this year, and he accomplished that goal well.

It is such a joy for me to watch Tim and the kids run. They put so much hard work and training into their sport, and on days like today we get to see the pay off.

We were grateful to receive lots of Chick-fil-a gift cards in our race packets, so that’s exactly where we went for lunch after all the festivities were over. But, only after stopping for a fun family coffee break first.

As we anticipate next year’s race, and as Tim and the kids continue to train their bodies, we pray to be found faithful as we train in this life. We choose to faithfully follow the Lord Jesus each day. Truly the only race that matters is following our Lord Jesus Christ to the very end. Then we shall receive the prize we long for the most – eternity with our Lord and Savior in heaven.

“…let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…” (Hebrews 12:1-2)

Be blessed today!

Unbeknownst to us, someone captured a fun picture for us while we were taking a selfie (pictured above) 🙂

You Ain’t REAL Country ’til You Fish

Levi is going on twelve, and several weeks ago he described a deep urge/desire to go fishing. He had never been, and after doing the math we realized that the last time any of us had gone fishing was 6 or 7 years ago on the Lake with Captain Dave. The following day God made some arrangements. It was the day that we went to the courthouse for prayer and Scripture reading. After seeing and chatting with our friendly county neighbors we all returned to our daily lives. Later that day, after some friendly texting, our dear friend Kay texted: “Y’all ought to come over and fish with us sometime!” What a surprise! You see, they were on the top of our list for an upcoming invitation to dinner at our place. Instead, they beat us to it with an invitation to fish, just a day after Levi expressed the desires of his heart.

The date was set, and we showed up on a ‘cool’ August afternoon. I say cool because for a mid-summer afternoon in Georgia it was remarkably pleasant. Somewhat overcast but with no rain in the forecast. Mr. Lloyd had already arranged up to 9 kid friendly fishing poles and the two of them (Lloyd and Kay) geared up for a long afternoon of teaching and helping kids bate hooks, untangle lines and plier hooks out of catch-and-release small fish. It was truly priceless! To entertain an entire, large, non-fishing family with varying levels of interests, genders, and ages was quite the feat. EVERYONE had a blast!

Mama learned how to cast. Eliana caught a million fish (well, more like eight or so). Several of us caught giant cat fish, which we kept and later cleaned to eat. Natalie even caught fish, and Knox dropped his pole when he felt a tug. Anyone interested caught multiples of mostly small and medium brim that we didn’t keep due to the many small bones that would later challenge our inexperienced palates if we ate them. We did keep some medium sized bass that Levi and others caught.

Levi was awesome. He was so thrilled that he had to run from place to place as if he wouldn’t have time to just walk it. James and John Luke were, of course, in their country living element, but even Timothy and the older girls had a great time helping little ones and fishing themselves.

It was surely a generous treat that we all enjoyed thoroughly. Of course, it was extra fun because we had help and we were guaranteed fish, which we didn’t assume beforehand. Later Mr. Lloyd took the time to clean all the fish, and by the end of it he was teaching John Luke to scrape scales and cut off tails when called for. Brave Mr. Lloyd and even braver Mr. John Luke and bravest Mrs. Mama for not watching Johnny handle that knife. 😉

I, Tim, had even been digging out a pond at our place before this invitation came up, but because of this fishing trip and talking to Lloyd about his pond, my plans for my pond have changed dramatically. I was digging a wide and shallow duck pond but am now digging a deeper one for fish. I am not naively assuming that I will be able to stock fish in my pond, but what I once thought impossible I now think possible. My current pond site goes dry so I decided to bowl it out for more water retention and for a duck pond because I never thought it could be anything more. Thanks to Lloyd I can now at least hope that it can be anything more. If nothing else, we will end up with a much bigger and deeper mud hole to play in. I am grateful!

Enjoy the pictures~

PS. Thank you, Lloyd and Kay, for your extreme generosity and kindness. Y’all are awesome! We are touched and impressed by how much you love each other and Jesus. You were the perfect fishing companions and hosts and we are all tremendously grateful. See ya soon!

Tim

A Fire is Ignited

It is a beautiful thing to celebrate the marriage covenant of a young couple who are committing their lives and faithfulness to one another as well as to the Lord. The kids and I had the privilege of attending such a celebration over the weekend. All glory was given to God, and there was much rejoicing!

During our time in Tennessee we had fun relaxing, playing, and going to new places. Our morning in downtown Gatlinburg turned into a very significant time for a couple of our kids. Why? Did we pay for expensive rides and amusement park fun? No. In fact, we were shocked by how expensive everything was. Our family tends to enjoy simple fun and just being together. So we were quite surprised when we realized that even going to see some parrots on a mountain for a few hours would cost over $250!!! Needless to say, we skipped the parrots.

So, what made our day in Gatlinburg significant? Well, what to others may seem like an annoyance or frustration, or may even make them angry, absolutely delighted two of our children. There was a smiling, friendly man passing out gospel tracts on the bustling streets of that touristy city. As we passed by him, he handed John Luke and then Eliana his last two tracts. I smiled at him, thanked him, and told him that we also love Jesus. He was happy to hear it.

Why did those gospel tracts mean so much to John Luke and Eliana? They hear the gospel everyday at home. They have watched many gospel presentations. They both love the Lord Jesus and have repented of their sins and believed on Him for salvation. But, this was the first time they had ever personally been given a gospel tract. This was the first time they saw a kind, loving stranger who looked them in the eye and handed them the very words of life.

Eliana showed her delight and joy outwardly as she does so well. John Luke internalized his excitement. But, they both had the same reaction. They both wanted to give their tracts away to someone they did not know. They were emboldened by a stranger’s kindness to go and do likewise. It seemed like those tracts would burn holes in their hands until they gave them away.

Within the hour Eliana had given her gospel tract to a lady at the grocery store. She was so nervous and yet so excited! Eliana joyfully told the lady she wanted to share something special with her and she hoped she would read it. She let the elderly lady know how much God loves her. The nice lady thanked Eliana, and we were on our way. Eliana immediately hugged me and was so happy to have shared her tract. I was proud of her too. But, as a Mama I was way more blessed than I was proud of her. Of all the attractions to be enticed by in downtown Gatlinburg (which we didn’t participate in), what meant the most to her was the example she witnessed of an evangelist doing his work unto the Lord. I praise God for that man and his example to our children.

That same night, Eliana and John Luke were so eager for me to order the exact tracts they had been given. They didn’t want to look at any other variations. That dear man had been used of the Lord to ignite a little fire in our children’s hearts, and they wanted to replicate exactly what he had done. Praise the Lord!

Well, we found the same tracts online and ordered them and are now anxiously awaiting their arrival in the mail. John Luke and Eliana both wanted to make sure that they used their money to pay for this significant purchase. My Mama’s heart cannot help but be overjoyed.

What a weekend! We were part of a glorious wedding celebration where two young people made a lifelong covenant before the Lord. And our young, impressionable children were emboldened to be a brighter shining light for Jesus.

Be blessed today!

Hannah made a delicious breakfast for us while we were away!

A Big Disappointment Turned Into Many Blessings

Some things you just really look forward to in life. And as a parent, sometimes you really look forward to things because you know how much they mean to your children. We love that our children love God and His Word and that they love to be surrounded with other young people and families who also love the Lord.

For many months now, some of our children have really looked forward to a big event in Ohio where there would be lots of Scripture quoting with other young people and families. There would also be lots of wonderful fellowship and fun times together. Our kids have really come to treasure many precious friendships the Lord has given them.

Exactly 24 hours before some of us were scheduled to set out for Ohio, I received a phone call which prompted a family meeting in the living room. A dear, kind lady called to let me know that many of the families who would be attending this big event had just gotten the stomach bug a couple days prior. And we’re not talking about a handful of families. We’re talking about a large group of over 20 families and around 100 people. (All the kids’ eyes were wide upon hearing the news). The stomach bug with one, two, even three or four kids is somewhat manageable, though certainly not a walk in the park. But when our whole family gets the stomach bug – yikes! And to think of getting the stomach bug 10 hours away from home… well. Though it was a huge disappointment, it was a rather easy decision for our kids to make. Sadly, they would not attend the much anticipated event.

We decided to pray as a family that the Lord would direct our steps that week after we cancelled our original plans. We prayed that he would direct us to cross paths with others that we would not have met otherwise. We also prayed that all the “outsider” families who were headed to the big event would be spared from all the sickness.

The morning of the cancelled trip, Tim and I talked through some fun ideas for the week. We decided to take the kids out to a local breakfast place (local to us means a 45 minute drive). 🙂 That special place happened to be out of commission that morning, so we ended up at Chick-fil-A. Still a treat because we rarely go out to eat as a family. Then, we all headed over to Goodwill. That’s always an adventure! Almost everyone found a little treasure of some sort, and I found the perfect loveseat for our boys’ room for a great deal – the very item I was hoping to find that day!

Upon taking the loveseat out to our van, we discovered it didn’t fit. I think Tim might have known all along that it wouldn’t fit. 🙂 But he humored me and let me see first hand that not everything can fit in our van. Ha! Well, very soon a little crowd had gathered around us outside of Goodwill. People were trying to help us figure out how to stuff our newly purchased loveseat in the van. Maybe on top of the seats? Maybe on top of our tall van? Maybe standing up sideways? Nothing worked, though. Then, a nice gentlemen offered us some of his bungee cords. If the loveseat wouldn’t fit with the doors closed we could at least bungee them together so they would be partially shut. He kindly worked with Tim to get everything squared away, and we felt everything would be relatively secure to travel the 45 minutes back home.

Meanwhile I met a precious lady who was also trying to help us strategize. We got talking about activated charcoal – a product I always keep in my purse in case of emergencies. One thing led to another and before we parted ways she allowed me to pray for her with our whole family gathered around. I just love that a dilemma (the loveseat not fitting in the van) can bring complete strangers together to talk and pray with one another. What a blessing! And since then, I believe we have made a new friend with this precious lady as we have been able to keep in touch.

The next day Tim announced that he was going to keep the six youngest kids at home while he sent the four big kids and Mama away to Jekyll Island for two days. 🙂 I absolutely love going to Jekyll Island! That is an understatement. It has become one of my favorite places. A very secluded, relaxing beach getaway. My Mom actually gave us a coupon for a free night at a beautiful hotel on Jekyll. The kids and I were super excited!!

One thing the boys really hoped for on our short getaway was a nice breakfast. A few times through the years we have stayed at a Residence Inn, which provides a great free breakfast buffet. But the hotel we stayed in this time didn’t serve a free breakfast. No, breakfast at this hotel cost $20 per person. Yikes! Needless to say we took our own granola to eat in the room. Upon arrival, I checked us into the hotel while the kids waited in the car. I was helped by a friendly young lady named Jin who was just super kind. When she found out that this was a special weekend away for the kids and me she gave us all a FREE breakfast! What a kind gesture! I couldn’t wait to tell the kids, especially the boys.

Timothy and James were thrilled with the news! And after we settled into our room we all went back to talk with Jin. The kids introduced themselves and thanked her for her generosity. She then proceeded to give us more than a handful of coupons for free coffees at a local coffee shop. Wow! Another treat! One of the things we love to do together is hang out over coffee.

We had such a lovely, relaxing, fun weekend. It really was perfect in every way. Coffee together twice. Jumping in the waves. Great talks. A walk on the beach in the evening. Another walk on the beach in the early morning. A huge free breakfast. I treasure these days with our children, and time away with just the big kids was such a treat! Sweet memories.

Though the week started out with a huge disappointment, it sure did end with many, many blessings. We praise the Lord for His kindness in our lives, even down to the little treats he surprises us with along the way.

Psalm 68:19. “Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation.”

Be blessed today!

Flying Duck

When I was a little boy my first soccer outfit was a Spanish national team goalie uniform. I loved Arconada and his wonderful flying saves. I’m not sure why, but back then the word for a spectacular flying goalie save was “palomita,” which could translate as “popcorn” or more literally “little dove.” I went on to have a  very satisfying personal career in soccer, which ended up having more to do with scoring the goals rather than saving them. Thirty some years later I was minding my own business raising a growing family in rural America when I unsuspectedly returned to my childhood in the most exhilarating of ways.

This story took place around 2013 when we had just moved out to our new home on the south side of the county after spending three great years in the city limits of a small town in Georgia. Among the homestead elements we were transferring from one property to the other were three giant muscovy ducks. These primarily white ducks with secondary gray feathers were big and beautiful from a distance but quite hideous looking from close up because they had strange, red facial boils.

Ducks are famous for their ability to eat flies and mosquitoes, and they are fun to watch waddling around, especially when they have yellow ducklings following them everywhere. About once daily they would take off and gracefully fly at about forty feet high, an acre sized circle around the house and then land again.

Now to the cons. Another valuable lesson I learned while growing up was the catchy phrase “Little dog, little poop. Big dog, big poop.” Of course back then I didn’t seem to grasp the significance. Now my eyes widened and wisened to the fact that that age-old phrase transferred perfectly to ducks as well. Little ducks…Big ducks…

Yep, you smell the picture. Of course, if they stayed out in the field or if we had a pond (which we now have a wet weather pond but did not then) for them to live in it would be different, but of all places in this large acreage we live on they chose to roost on the railing of the deck porch right outside of our master bedroom. Yes sir! The most pleasant porch to be on in the morning breeze was this one, and woah what a greeting. Granted that the ugly red faces of those girls wouldn’t have been a pleasant sight to wake up to, but their inappropriate backside greetings were even more offensive.

It got bad enough that we would try to chase them off the railing as soon as they tried to settle in at dusk. We flapped our arms at them and smacked them off of the ten foot railing into the side yard. “Go find yourselves another place to sleep, ladies!” They would ninety-eight percent of the time make sure to plop a fresh one at our often barefooted feet just as they begrudgingly took flight. The next morning they were back finishing up their nighttime rest, thus insinuating how they didn’t give a duckling about our wishes.  As you can imagine, something had to give, and as you can also imagine I wasn’t about to let them be the ones giving anymore. As I write now, I know that duck meat is considered as some of the cleanest meat to eat and that would be my go-to solution for them now, but back then my solution was a bit more humane. I resolved to catch them and clandestinely drop them off at the State Park lake where they would be happier anyway.

I recruited the big kids to help me, who back then were just little big kids, as Hannah was only 8 or so. We tried to round them up one evening and put them in big cages for night time transport to the park. The passing of time has blurred some of the details, but the main point of the story remains vivid and as clear as evening in my mind. We had a fence enclosed blueberry patch to my left, next to an adjacent path that went up a small hill, with the woods and pig lot to my right. Lauren was at the top of the hill and I told her and another brother to begin to walk the one duck we were corralling down toward me. I was perhaps sixty feet away from them, and Hannah approached from the woods to somewhat narrow the duck’s options of escape. To be honest, it wasn’t a long shot nor a gimme, but what was about to happen certainly felt as a one in a million.

As I saw the opportunity present itself I said, “Lauren! Hurry! Run! Chase it toward me!” As she did, the duck began to waddle and run and flap and lift off as she ran down hill away from Lauren. She lifted off and flew toward me, and off to my left at my head height. I leaped diagonally up into the sky, and did the most exhilarating palomita I could ever have imagined making. I CAUGHT THE FLYING DUCK OUT OF THE SKY!  The crowd roared! Although it wasn’t composed of adoring soccer fans, it was composed of a small clan who did think that their Pa was larger than life. Oh the squeals and cheers and whooping and hollering that we all heartily let out until our breaths ran out!!!

Can you Imagine what went through the mind of this big little boy?  Out in remote, rural, small town USA’s evening countryside I discovered what Arconada must have felt when a filled stadium roared his name at the dazzling palomita he just did. My feat, however, was even greater than his as he had only caught a small dove and I had caught a giant flying duck.

We Dance in This Kitchen

What a blast! A mundane, overcast afternoon can turn into what feels like some monumental fun when you put a little music on and start dancing around the kitchen with your kids.

I was texting with our big kids who are out of town canvassing this week, and they suggested that I add a certain country song to our playlist. I have a weakness for country music, especially the good songs. 🙂 A quick search and listen confirmed that I should definitely purchase the song.

In no time, Esther and I were dancing around the kitchen together with our new song on repeat. The dancing continued with Natalie and Knox, and of course Esther’s baby doll too. That girls loves babies! We even fit in some Ring around the Rosie several times in repeated circles as the country music blared on.

John Luke decided to join the fun by throwing an oven mitt my way. I quickly grabbed it up and said, “Hey!” as I threw it back his way, and we cracked up together! That turned into an all out game of oven mitt frisbee for the next 10 minutes. We tried so hard to get to 5 “frisbee” catches in a row. It seemed futile. Finally, I declared we could only play the song one more time, so we had to go all out trying for 5 catches. What do you know?! Just as the song was ending, we made 7 catches!!! Woohooo!!! We were soooo excited!!!

So many happy screams and so much laughter was heard around our kitchen this afternoon. What a blast!

It’s the simple things that matter most, especially to children. So, put on a fun song and dance around your kitchen. It just might make you super happy!

Be blessed today!

Allyson

ps. If you’re curious which song we were playing, it’s called ‘Til You Can’t by Cody Johnson. You could even try playing it while you read this post to get a true feel of what our afternoon was like. 🙂 We also are pretty crazy about the song Buy Dirt by Jordan Davis.

Let the Fun Begin

We were so blessed to be given such a fantastic deal on tables and chairs that were in great condition! But, they did need a good cleaning. That’s where a big family definitely comes in handy. One day after lunch we set the chairs out in the yard and got to work scrubbing them down.

Some of the little ones thought all the “work” they were doing was great fun!

As you may have noticed from the last post, the chairs had FOL written boldly in sharpie marker on the back of them. That stands for Friends of the Library. We were grateful to be able to clean the writing off the chairs with a little elbow grease. 🙂

More hands make the work go by faster. They also make it way more fun!

Be blessed today!
