A Good Name is Rather to be Chosen… (Part 2)

“Mama, come see this cow,” James called from the dining room where he was searching Craigslist for Jersey milk cows.

“OK. I’ll be there in a minute,” I called back from the kitchen. It was a busy Saturday morning with lots of life happening all around me.

Two minutes later my eyes opened wide as I read the listing. “Oh, let’s text about this one,” I told James. We both had a glimmer in our eyes. This particular cow and her calf were only a little less than an hour drive from our house. That’s close! I texted the owner, Katie, and she was super pleasant to correspond with. What a gift!

Within three hours Tim and James went to visit Katie, along with her cow and calf, Rosemary and Goat-Goat. Her children had once named a goat that looked like a cow, “Cow-Cow,” so the logical name for their calf was “Goat-Goat.” Gotta love it!

Tim and James arrived back home and we all talked it over. It was a no-brainer. We wanted this cow-calf pair. Even better, it was such a nice experience with Katie. She told us everything we wanted and needed to know about Rosemary and Goat-Goat. Nothing hidden. It really seemed that Katie had chosen a “good name.”

We made arrangements with Katie, and she and her husband offered to deliver the two cows to our house the very next Saturday. That was the same day as our annual fall party, but we were super excited to add this long-awaited event to our schedule.

Katie and her family arrived with the cows early Saturday afternoon, and our whole family surrounded them with excitement and anticipation! Rosemary and her calf walked right out of their trailer and into our pasture. James was with them immediately and soaked in every bit of the moment. Nervous, but excited!

But, what would milking be like that first evening and the following morning? How would the cows adjust? Thankfully, they did beautifully, and they were exactly as Katie described them to be.

Milk. Fresh, raw milk. What a glorious treat!

A few days went by, and I just had to call Katie to thank her. I was so blessed by our interactions with her as well as our transaction. She chose a “good name” and was honest with us about her two cows. She followed through with exactly what she said she would do. We had a great conversation together on the phone. And what a blessing that a new friendship has begun. 🙂

We are so thankful! We are thankful for Katie and her honesty and transparency. We are thankful for our two new cows. Rosemary now goes by “Rosie” instead, and we call Goat-Goat “Red Bull.” We are also thankful for nutritious, delicious, raw milk.

Thank you to those of you who have asked about our search for a milk cow. Thank you also to those of you who have prayed for us. We are blessed indeed to have new cows and new friends.

To God be the glory!

“A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.” (Proverbs 22:1)

Be blessed today!

Allyson

*James and Rosie have definitely bonded. Rosie is a mid-sized Jersey cow. This picture makes her look smaller than she really is. We sure love her!
